How to add Skills with an AI agent

A skill is a folder with a SKILL.md file that tells the agent how to do one job. Put it in .claude/skills/ for Claude Code, or in .agents/skills/ for Codex and Cursor. The agent loads it when the task matches the description, or when you call it by name.

Claude Code

  1. mkdir -p .claude/skills/release-notes (or ~/.claude/skills/ for all projects)
  2. Create .claude/skills/release-notes/SKILL.md with YAML frontmatter (name, description) between --- lines, then the instructions
  3. Call it with /release-notes, or let Claude pick it when the description matches

Codex

  1. mkdir -p .agents/skills/release-notes (or ~/.agents/skills/ for all projects)
  2. Write SKILL.md with name and description in the frontmatter
  3. Add optional scripts/, references/ and assets/ folders next to it

Cursor

  1. Use .agents/skills/ or .cursor/skills/ in the project, or ~/.cursor/skills/ globally
  2. Each skill is a folder with a SKILL.md
  3. Cursor walks the skills folder recursively, so you can group skills in subfolders

Grok Bot

  1. Do the task once with Grok Bot
  2. Ask it to save what worked as a skill so it repeats the same steps next time

Gotchas

  • The description decides when a skill loads. Write it as "Use when..." with the words people actually type.
  • A skill that runs scripts runs them with the agent's permissions. Read third-party skills before installing.
  • One .agents/skills/ folder works for both Codex and Cursor.
